The return of Holly
At this time Patrick and Lara are dating in secret. Holly has been gone for about 12 months. Lara has replaced Holly and everyone is back to working as normal. Everyone has forgotten Holly except Patrick who still thinks about her a lot and even though Lara and him are dating, deep down Patrick still wants Holly.
An unusually quiet A&E department
Charlie: Hey Lara, have you seen Patrick anywhere I have some good news for him.
Lara: Yeah he was in the staff room last time I saw him
Charlie: Cheers Lara, hey Im sorry you have decided to move on, but congratulations on passing all your exams. I hope you go on along way in London.
Lara: Yeah thanks Charlie Have you got a replacement yet?
Charlie: Yeah we have actually, the person you took over is coming back, she gave up due to some very unfortunate circumstances, but now she is ready to return back. Today she is coming in for a look round. You know just to refresh on things. Thats the good news I wanted to tell Patrick, he used to have a thing about her, he is going to show her around today.
Lara looks a bit shocked and very jealous
Lara: Oh right well I better be getting back to work. I hope Patrick has fun showing round this fabulous SHO.
Lara walks off in a huff and Charlie looks a bit baffled.
Charlie: I wonder what that was all about?
Charlie walks over to the staff room to find Patrick
Charlie: Hi Patrick, I have some news for you
Patrick: Oh yeah, what is it?
Charlie: Well you remember Holly Miles dont you?
Patrick: How could anyone forget her?
Charlie: Well as you know Lara will be leaving for her doctor post at London at the end of the month. Holly Miles will be her replacement and Jan Goddard has asked for you to show her round. You know like a refresher.
Patrick: Yeah that will be fine. When will it be?
Charlie: Oh sorry, it will be this afternoon
Patrick: yeah sure, Ill do it.
Charlie: Cheers
Charlie walks out the room and Patrick has a smile over his face.
Patrick mutters to himself
Patrick: Fancy Holly coming back, I thought the reason she left was because she couldnt handle the past in this place.
That Afternoon
Holly walks over to Jack
Holly: Hiya Jack, remember me, Holly. Is Charlie around?
Jack: UmYeah, Hang on
At that point Charlie walks over to reception to collect a patient card.
Jack: Charlie, Hollys here to see you.
Charlie: Oh right thanks Jack
Charlie walks over to Holly
Charlie: Hi Holly, how you doing?
Holly: Oh Hi Charlie, Im fine now, I just needed some time to think and move on from what happened. I realised I couldnt live without this place. Now Toms gone I think I can move on.
Charlie: Good, well Im glad you are ok now. Oh yeah its not me thats showing you around, it will be Patrick Spiller.
Holly: Oh the faithful Dr Spiller. Good Ill go and find him. C ya Charlie.
Holly walks into the cubicle department and stands by the white boards. She smiles as she sees Patrick coming out a cubicle.
Holly: Hey Patrick!
Patrick: Holly, How you doing? Its great to see you,
Holly: Oh yeah, Im fine, you?
Patrick: Im great.
Holly: Well do you wanna go for a coffee?
Patrick: Well, yeah Im on my break in 10 minutes; Ill meet you in the canteen
Holly: Yeah, C ya there.
10 minutes later in the Canteen
Patrick: So Holly, what made you come back
Holly: You want the truth?
Patrick: Well Yes
Holly: It was you, after all this time, I relised I had to put what happened to me behind. I knew that I wanted you.
Patrick: Well.. um I dunno what to say
Holly: Nothing just this..
Holly leans over and kisses Patrick
Patrick: Holly Im
Holly: No, please dont say youre seeing someone.
Patrick looks down and then over to the doors
Patrick: No of course not.
Holly: Good, do you think we could try again?
Patrick: Holly, you have just come back, dont you think we should wait?
Holly: No, why. Look Patrick, you saved my life. I owe my life to you.
Patrick: Look Holly my breaks up, ive got to go.
Holly: You are showing me around remember.
Patrick: Oh yeah, look give me 2 minutes.
Patrick walks out the canteen to find Lara
He finds her in cubicle 3.
Patrick: Lara
Lara: Oh hi Patrick
Patrick: You heard about Holly being back here
Lara: Yeah, I heard that there was something between her and you ages ago?
Patrick: Yeah youre right, thats what Im here for. I just wanted you to know what you felt about me.
Lara: Patrick, what kind of question is that? Of course I love you. Do you love me?
Theres a silence as Patrick turns slowly and looks to the ground.
Lara: Well, do you love me or not? If you dont then we might as well finish
Patrick: Yeah sure, I love you.
Lara: Good
Lara gives Patrick a kiss but then Holly walks into the corridor and sees Lara and Patrick Kissing. Out of the corner of Patricks eye he sees Holly and pushes Lara away from him.
Lara: Whats up Patrick?
Patrick: Nothing it just didnt feel right.
Lara: look Im not even sure if you love me or not. When you have decided let me know.
Lara walks off as holly walks in and looks at Patrick.
Holly: Is that your girlfriend?
Patrick: Um Yeah
Holly: You told me that
Patrick: I know I did, its just that well I dont really love her. You are the person I havent stopped thinking about since well you know. I keep trying to finish it. I just cant.
Holly: Look Patrick, I came here not for my job but because I wanted you. I wanted to move on and the first day I come in I find out that you are going to try and two time me. Its not on. When you sort it out. Let me know what you decide.
Holly walks off and Patrick has a depressed look on his face
Patrick: Two girls in one day saying the same thing to me.
Spencer walks over looking at the door that Holly went out of.
Spencer: Was that Holly?
Patrick: Yeah
Spencer: I thought that you would be happy to see her, I thought you were missing her.
Patrick: I was, look its complicated ok
Spencer: You want to talk about it. I think I know already. Is it about you and Lara
Patrick: How did you know?
Spencer: Ive seen the way you two look at each other. I think you just see her as a replacement for Holly. You and holly were made for each other. Dont give her up again. You may never forgive yourself for the rest of your life. Look you saved her life. I heard somewhere that that means that you own it for the rest of your life. If you let her go again you may never get the chance to see her again. Go for it while you have the chance.
Patrick: You know Spencer that actually makes sense. Thanks
Patrick walks off to find Lara
Patrick: Lara, I need to talk to you.
Lara: Yeah sure, you made your mind up yet?
Patrick: Look Lara, I have decided. I cant go out with you anymore. I love Holly, Im sorry. Its just I cant work out my life yet, I need time to sort things out. Im sorry.
Lara: Right, yeah I get the picture. Well I hope shes worth it for you.
Patrick: Yeah she is.
Patrick walks out the room and goes to find Holly to take her on the tour around.
Patrick: Hey Holly. Ive made my mind up
Holly: Yeah? Whats the answer then?
Patrick: I love you Holly, I thought about it and Ive never stopped loving you, I realised that there is no one else I want to be with. Lara was a distraction while I got over you. But I never could.
Holly: Oh Patrick!
Holly and Patrick kiss again, but Charlie walks into the room
Charlie: Oh Sorry, I didnt mean to disturb anything. Its good to see you still remember each other.
Holly: Oh yeah no one could ever forget the arrogant Patrick Spiller!
Patrick: Cheers Holly
Holly: Yeah, Im glad Im back. I can move on now.
Patrick: And Ill go back to being an arrogant pig, yeah?
Holly and Patrick both laugh as they leave the room and go back to work

Scene One
*Patrick lies in bed asleep. He is awoken by the phone ringing. He groans*
Patrick - OK, OK! What lunatic rings at this time in the morning?!
*Answers phone*
Patrick [annoyed] - Yes, what d'ya want?
Lara - Hi, it's me.
Patrick - Oh, hi, sorry. There'd better be a good excuse for this rude awakening!
Lara - Ah, yeah - you see, there is a little favour I was going to ask...
Patrick - Here comes the bombshell.
Lara - A friend of mine, she lives in the country, and well, she's kinda desperate...
Patrick - Tell her to get out more.
Lara [grinning] - No, not that sort of desperate. She's got a fence and the whole thing collapsed last night after the storm...and, well...I kinda promised that I knew someone who could fix it.
Patrick - Oh great, thanks Lara - that's just what I wanted on my morning off.
Lara - Yeah, well she didn't really want the sheep roaming around wild in her back garden any longer...oh, come on Patrick, please? I might take you out tonight if you do.
Patrick [giving in] Do I have a choice?
Lara [sounding happy] Knew you couldnt resist. The address is 3 Brumley Road, near Wormley Wood, you can get to the garden by going around the side of the house. See you at 1pm for the shift I guess?
Patrick - Yeah OK. Love you.
Lara - You too.
*Patrick puts receiver down*
Scene Two
*Meanwhile, back at Holby, a young woman in her mid-twenties walks in through the entrance. She has long brown hair tied back in a ponytail, and is wearing a pale blue blouse. As she walks in she stops for a minute, glances around and smiles to herself. She walks towards the reception area, then turns to look at the waiting room. She looks at the scrolling LED display Waiting time 5 hours. She grins and says to herself Some things dont change then!. Jack notices her and taps her on the shoulder *
Jack Um, excuse me are you looking for someone?
* The woman swings around. Jack looks at her intently. Max walks through the duble doors towards reception *
Jack Hang ondo I know you? You know, Im sure I.
* Max looks towards them and, upon seeing the woman, walks up to them *
Max Holly!
Holly Max! At least someone hasnt forgotten me around here!
Max [looking at Jack] Oh, for heavens sake Jack.
Jack OhHolly! [Has a look of sudden realisation on his face] Yeah, I remember you! You were the one who got a bit too much attention from that anaesthetist, eh?
* Holly stops smiling and, being uncomfortable, looks to the floor. Max glares at Jack, who is still grinning oblivious as to the problem with what he just said *
Max [cold/angry] Jack, havent you got work to do?
Jack [smile fading] What? What have I done? [Tuts and walks off]
Max Sorry about that Holly. Doesnt think before he opens that rather oversized mouth of his.
Holly Nah, it doesnt matter.
[pause]
Max So, hows life been away from Holby?
* They walk into his office and the door closes behind them *
Holly Yeah, its been pretty good actually. Though German food isnt all that appetising! Nah, its been refreshing to get away. Im back in England for a few weeks, visiting family and friends thought Id pop by to see how youre all coping without me!
Max Oh, were coping absolutely fine without you, like you had never left. [Grins] Kidding. Where are you working?
Holly The Berndorf Krankenhaus not as nice as Holby though!
Max I should hope so!
Holly So, hows Pa
* They are interrupted by Dillon who pokes his head around the door *
Dillon Hi, um, sorry Max, youre needed in resus. Female, RTA, massive internal bleeding.
Max [to Holly] Oh, OK. Holly, Ill have to leave you for a while. You can get a drink or something.
Holly Yeah, sure. Thanks Max.
* Max nods and rushes out. Holly leaves the office, gets herself a coffee and sits and reads a magazine *
Scene Three
* Patrick parks his car outside the cottage of Laras friend it is in a secluded road. He rings the doorbell *
Patrick Hello? Hello? [knocks door] Anyone in?
* There is no answer *
Patrick [annoyed] Ill take that as a no then. [Sarcastically] Hey, dont worry Ive come to fix your fence on my morning off but dont bother to be in. Maybe Ill even make myself a cup of tea using the rainwater and discuss politics with the grass.
* Patrick walks around the side of the house to the back garden carrying a rather new-looking, unused tool kit. He sees the fence in its mangled state. He puts his kit down and starts to fiddle with it *
Patrick How do you open this thing? [Annoyed] I mean, youd think theyd manufacture it so you can actually open it.
* Eventually he succeeds and starts to try and get the fence from its mutilated state. A faint sound of banging can be heard in the distance. There is woodland backing onto the garden almost immediately.
The banging gets louder. Curiosity gets the better of him, and he leaves his handiwork and climbs over the fence to see if he can find where the banging is coming from. He walks into the woodland for a few minutes. He hears a scuffling, then the sound of someone running across the ground amongst the trees, although he cannot see them *
Patrick Hello? Anyone there? Im
* A loud bang is heard and his words are cut off by a sharp, searing pain the pain of something penetrating his leg. He starts to groan, and collapses onto the wet, saturated ground.
He had been shot*
Scene Four
* Back at Holby A&E *
Lara [to patient] There you go. Come back and get the stitches out in a week, it shouldnt take long to heal.
* The patient thanks her, Lara smiles and walks to the wipe-clean board to erase the patients name from the list. Duffy walks up to Lara. *
Duffy Oh, Lara youre going in 5 minutes OK? Comfort and Nikki should be back by then.
Lara [bemused] Sorry?
Duffy Youre observing the paramedics today, remember?
Lara Oh, damn, yeah. I forgot. UmOK, Ill be ready.
* Lara goes to get her fluorescent green and yellow jacket. Comfort appears. *
Comfort Hey Lara, you ready to come riding?
Lara [looks at watch] Hi, yeah. Im just waiting to see if theres any sign of Patrick, he said hed be here at 1pm cos his shift starts then. [Scans the surrounding area] He should be here by now. [Annoyed] I wanted to talk to him
Comfort [grinning] - Hey, isnt there something going on between you two? [Teasing] I didnt think he was your type.
Lara [grins] Its nothing that concerns you. I had him doing some DIY this morning fixing a fence for a mate of mine.
Comfort Ooh, romantic! He must have it bad for you if hes already doing things like that for you!
Lara - Never you mind. Now, are we gonna get going or not?
Comfort Yeah, OK. [Leans towards Lara] Oh, and just a bit of advice you might wanna take that jacket off until youre in the ambulancelover-boy could appear any minute it might put him off you[winks and walks ahead]
Lara [shouts after her] Ha-ha!
* Lara follows Comfort *
Scene Five
* Patrick lies on the ground in the wood you can see clearly where he has been shot as his trousers have a small circular hold in them. Blood is dripping out of the wound. He is groaning with pain. A man of about forty, wearing scruffy jeans and carrying a gun, runs down towards him. *
Man Oh my God [kneels down beside Patrick and puts his gun on the ground] Hello? Can you hear me? Speak to me!
* Patrick is falling unconcious *
Man [panicking] Umphone, phone! [searches his jacket pockets frantically] DAMN! [stands up] Um, OK mate Im going to get help. Umdont moveIll be back soonoh my God
* The man runs off up the slope through the trees. Suddenly, he gets his foot wedged under a tree root and falls, cracking his head on the ground and cutting it *
Man Argh! [grimaces and puts his hand to the wound there is blood on it]
* The man struggles to get up but he cannot. He tries again but gives up. Then, he feels a lump in his trouser pocket. He puts his hand in and retrieves a battered phone. *
Man [with relief] Thank God! [looks at the display the battery is almost dead]. Ohplease, dont cut out on me.
* With his quivering fingers he keys in 999 *
Man [hurriedly] Hello, um, ambulance please. Im in Wormley Wood, the east side quick, hurry theres a man, hes been
* The phone cuts out *
Scene Six
* Lara, Nikki and Comfort are sitting in the ambulance eating some lunch. *
Lara [staring at the wall] I wonder if Patrick is at the hospital yet.
Comfort [grins] Ah, were back on the subject of grumpy guts again! Man, Im telling you theres definitely something going on between you two! Youve got him on the brain!
Nikki [surprised] What? [Guffaws] Lara and Patrick an item? [Face breaks into a grin and turns to look at Lara] My, my. Wonders never ceasehes not exactly a catch.
Lara [scornfully] Yeah, well lets just say I was more than slightly surprised to hear you were with Jackof all people.
Nikki [smile fades] What are you saying, that Im a freak or something?
Lara [with mock surprise and sarcasm] Thats funny I thought you were just implying that about me.
Comfort [sensing a cat-fight in the pipeline] Ladies, calm down OK?
* A voice comes over the radio *
Voice Holby Control to 3018, over.
Nikki 3018, receiving, over.
Voice Theres a call to Wormley Wood, casualties unknown. Youll have to do a search on the east side. Police assistance will be sent if required.
Nikki OK, all received and mobile.
Comfort OK, lets go girls!
Lara Hang on, where did they say it was again?
Comfort Wormley Wood why?
Lara [slightly worried] Oh, its just thats where Patrick was this morning fixing the fenceon the east side
Scene Seven
* Holly is sitting in the hospital café eating her lunch. Anna notices her and approaches *
Anna Hey, Holly!
Holly [looks up and smiles] Hello!
Anna Hows it going mate? What are you doing back here? [sits down at the table with Holly]
Holly Oh, Im just visiting. Ive been in Germany.
Anna Yeah, I heard. Patrick got that postcard from you a while back.
Holly [smiles, looks away and looks a bit dreamy] Yeah[looks at Anna] How is he?
Anna Patrick? Oh, as grumpy as ever.
Holly [grins] No change there then.
Anna [has a look of sudden realisation on her face] Heyyouve still got the hots for him, havent you?!
Holly [embarrassed, looks at the table] No, I wouldnt say that
Anna [looks excited] Well, Im telling you mate if you still want him, youd better make a move before its too late.
Holly [looks up to Anna and looks slightly worried] What do you mean?
Anna Just trust me on this one, yeah? I cant explain now. I gotta go, see you later.
* Anna gets up and starts to walk off *
Holly [calls out] But Anna
* Anna does not hear her. Holly is left staring at her cheese sandwich, looking confused and bewildered *
Scene Eight
* The ambulance arrives near Wormley Wood. As they are unable to take the ambulance into the wood itself, they park as close as possible. Lara jumps out first.
Lara [taking charge] Cmon, quick. Nikki, stop faffing around I dont know about you but Ive got a job to do [snatches medical kit out of her hands]. And lives to save.
Nikki [annoyed] Temper, temper. Just cos you think it could be Patrick out there.
Lara Yeah, well Im not taking any chances. Not after last time. Now come on, get moving!
* Lara sets off at a half-run. Comfort and Nikki follow behind *
Lara [shouting] HELLO? IS ANYONE THERE? WERE PARAMEDICS WEVE COME TO HELP. HELLO?
* Comfort and Nikki join in the shouting *
* The man lies on the ground, and hears their cries *
Man Ohoh thank God. [yells] Hello! Over here! Quick!
* All three run towards the voice, up the slope. They see the man on the ground. Lara puts the kit down, and has an expression on her face that looks like relief *
Comfort [to man] Hello. Whats your name?
Man [seems to be daydreaming/looks worried] Mick. Look
Comfort OK Mick, Im Comfort. Thats a nasty cut youve got there.
Mick [urgent] Dont worry about that, theres a man, hes been shot.
[Short pause]
Lara [concerned/with a matter of urgency] What, where?
Man [points down the opposite side of the slope] Down there.
Lara [very worried] You you shot him? Oh GodIll go.
Comfort [calls out] Larawait
* But Lara is already running down the slope at full pelt, out of sight *
*Lara runs down the slope and searches amongst the trees and undergrowth for any signs of a man who had been shot. Then she sees ita slumped figurea familiar figureA Patrick Spiller. *
Lara Oh God[runs to figure] NoPatrick, can you hear me? Its Lara. Dont do this to me again Patrick
*Her eyes become watery but she quickly brushes the tears away and pulls herself together *
Lara [urgently, yelling up slope] Comfort! Nikki! I need some help down here!
Comfort [upon hearing Laras yells] OK Nikki stay here with Mick. Try and sort his ankle out it needs some support.
Man [desperately] Oh, what have I done?
*Comfort scrambles to her feet *
Comfort Thats what Im about to find out
* Lara is checking Patricks pulse. Comfort appears *
Comfort [shocked/confused] Patrick?!
Lara Yeah[with a brief smile of relief] But hes got a pulse, hes still with us.
Comfort OK, but I dont like the look of that leg.
Lara I know, we need him in the ambulance ASAP. [Suddenly frustrated/angry] Wheres Nikki for Gods sake?
Comfort Shes with Mick. Im going to go and get the spinal board and see if I can get the ambulance any closer. Get some compression on that leg. Lara itll be OK.
* Comfort puts a reassuring hand on Laras shoulder and then runs off quickly *
Lara [runs her fingers across Patricks forehead] And if it isntthen who do I blame?
Scene Nine
* Duffy is sorting out some papers. Holly approaches and taps her on the shoulder *
Holly [smiles] Hey.
* Duffy turns around *
Duffy [surprised] Holly! Long time no see! Hows things?
Holly Oh, pretty good thanks. Im just visiting.
Duffy [smiles] Oh, so you havent come to save us then?
Holly [grins] Afraid not.
Duffy Oh well. Guess were stuck with Lara then[sees blank look on Hollys face] Oh, sorry. Laras the new SHO. From Sierra Leones warzone, but shes Australian. Of course, she could never replace you Holly[grins]
Holly [grins/joking] Of course! How do you cope without my amazing talent?
* The two laugh *
Holly Actually, I was hoping to catch up with Patrick, have you seen him anywhere?
Duffy I was just wondering that myself. He was supposed to be here at 1pm. Considerate of him not to be here. Oh, and Lara isnt here either shes out with the paramedics. So were two doctors down great.
Holly Oh well, I think Ill stick around and see if he shows his face. Hey, I could give you a hand if you want, Ive got nothing better to do.
Duffy [smiles/relieved] Really? Oh thanks Holly, youre a star! I dont think youd be allowed to treat the patients though, with you not working here anymore. But you could sort some of this paperwork out for me!
Holly [sees the huge pile of paper and looks less than enthusiastic] Yeahgreat.
Duffy [grins] Welcome back!
Scene Nine
* Comfort and Nikki are loading an unconscious Patrick into the back of the ambulance. Lara is standing outside the ambulance and looks on concerned, and upset. Mick (the man who shot Patrick) is hobbling up to the ambulance. *
Man [to Lara] II hope hes OK
Lara [turns to face man, angry] Yeah, well so do I. What the HELL were you playing at?
Comfort OK Lara, were ready to roll. We need to get Patrick to the hospital ASAP. Mick, you need to come with us I think that cut is going to need some stitches.
* Lara and the man get into the ambulance and it begins to drive off *
Man I didnt mean to, you know.
Lara You didnt mean to, eh? Then what in Gods name were you doing with a gun in that wood?
Man I was shooting rabbits, it was an accident, honest.
Lara [shakes her head in disbelief] Youyou just dont get it do you? You could have killed him.
Comfort [intervening] Lara, thats enough.
Man [nervous] Im sorry. [Looks at Patrick] Im sorry I shot him.
Lara [fuming] Yeah, well I damn well hope you are. [Looks at Patrick, then back at man] That guy, he happens to be someone that I
Comfort [angry] Lara, lay off! I know youre upset but now IS NOT the time.
* You see the ambulance driving off *
Scene Eleven
* Back at Holby A&E *
Holly And[puts her pen down]Ive finished.
Duffy Thats great Holly, thanks. Could you just-
* Voice comes over the receiver *
Voice 3018 to Holby, over.
Duffy [to Holly] Hang on. [picks up handset] Holby A&E, receiving, over.
Voice Duffy, its Nikki. Weve got a male with a puncture wound in the right leg from being shot. ETA 15-20 minutes. Duffy hes done it again. Its Patrick.
Holly [exclaims] Patrick?!
Duffy [looks at Holly, concerned] Um, OK Nikki, all received. Over. [Replaces handset]
Holly [very worried] Oh my God. But, I meansurelyit cant be him
Duffy Holly, calm down.
Holly ButI cant believe it.
Duffy I think, Holly, you should go and get a cup of tea or something, and sit down.
Holly But
Duffy Holly, come on.
* Duffy leads Holly to the relatives room *
Scene Twelve
* Patrick is wheeled into resus on a trolley. Max rushes to the trolley. *
Max Right, whatve we got? [looks at patient] Patrick?!
Lara [looking worried] Yeah, hes got a puncture wound to the right leg hes been shot.
Max [still looking at Patrick] Well, he sure doesnt waste any time.
Lara [annoyed] Thats not funny.
Max [looks up at Lara] - Sorry.
* The trolley is wheeled into one of the bays and grinds to a halt *
Max [checking Patricks eyes] OK, his pupils are responsive. Hang on, I think hes coming round. [To Patrick] Patrick, its Max. Youre in Holby A&E.
* Patrick still has his eyes shut but you can hear a groan from under his oxygen mask *
Max [to Lara] OK, good. Right, Im gonna need 10mg of morphine. Dillon can you arrange an X-ray ASAP [inspecting wound in Patricks leg] Were gonna have to find out just how far the bullet is lodged.
Lara [passes the morphine to Max] What do you think? The outlook I mean.
Max Well, theyre going to have to operate I should imagine. We dont know how much damage has been done. I think its missed the artery though hed been in a worse state if it had.
Dillon [putting phone down] OK Max, X-ray is free we can take him up now.
Max OK, thanks Dillon. [To Patrick] Patrick were just going to X-ray that leg of yours.
* Lara looks at Patrick worriedly. Max sees her. *
Max I think his chances are good Lara from what I can see, the bullet doesnt seem to be that far in.
Lara [with faint worried smile] Yeahbut it doesnt stop you worrying though.
Max Look, why dont you take a break, have a drink or something?
Lara Yeah, OK. [To Patrick] Hang in there Spiller. [kisses him on the forehead, pauses, then watches him be wheeled out through the double doors to X-ray]
Scene Thirteen
*Holly is sitting in the relatives room, holding a mug of coffee and staring at it. Colette walks past outside and looks in through the window and continues walking. Then, obviously recognising Holly, she walks back and into the room. *
Colette [smiling] Hello stranger!
Holly [with a weak smile] Hey
Colette [still smiling] I was just walking past and saw your face in here, I was[sees Hollys miserable face] Hey, whats wrong?
Holly [snapping out of daze] Oh, its nothing, honestly. Sorry Colette, I should have been more glad to see you.
Colette [smiles, sitting down besides Holly] Oh, dont worry about it. [Turning serious] Now are you going to tell me whats really bothering you?
Holly [weak smile] Oh, you dont want to listen to my problems.
Colette Holly, Im all ears.
Holly [after a pause, sighing] Its Patrick. Hes been brought in, hes been shot or something, and Im worried sick.
Colette [shocked] Oh no, Holly Im sorry. I didnt know, Ive only just got here for my shift.
[Pause]
Holly Duffy told me a few minutes ago that hes been taken to X-ray. [Pause] I dont know Colette, I just feel like I should be doing something, but I cant.
Colette [quietly] Hollyyou still have feelings for Patrick, dont you?
Holly [staring at coffee cup, gets more emotional throughout the following speech] I just keep thinking about all the times Ive hurt him, all the times I kept refusing his help. We were together at Med school, but I broke it off because I didnt think it was working he was too arrogant, self-centred. [Short pause] I think he took it worse than me. And ever since then, Ive never really got over him. I was too stubborn, I kept side-stepping my emotions, I kept telling myself it would never work, him and I. [Pause] And the stupid thing is, I guess it was me who was self-centred I kept knocking him back, without thinking about his feelings. He was always there for me its wonder he never gave up. [Pause] And thenand then there was Tomand ifand if Patrick hadnt found me
* Holly bursts into tears. Colette turns around and hugs her *
Colette [with watery eyes, affected by Hollys words] Sshhh, come on Holly. Its OK. And Im sure Patrick is going to be OK too.
Holly [still teary-eyed] I just want to tell himto tell him Im sorry. [Pause] He saved my life Colette how can I ever repay him?
Scene Fourteen
* Lara is walking along near reception, when she catches sight of a trolley being wheeled towards the lift. She heads towards it, but runs into a group of drunken football fans *
Football fan [grinning stupidly, eyeing Lara up and down] Ey up, sexy! Wanna get jiggy with me?!
Lara [wary, looks disgustedly at the fan] Erm, yeah maybe some other time[becomes annoyed, to the other fans] Look, excuse me, do you think I could actually get past?!
* Lara rushes past towards the trolley *
Football fan [shouting, drunkenly] You know ya want to, baby! You just cant resist!
Lara [under her breath, out of earshot from the fans] You wish.
* Lara reaches the trolley *
Lara [to Max, worried] How is he?
Max Why not ask him yourself?
Lara [to Patrick] Hey Spiller, how you feeling?
Patrick [removes oxygen mask, speaks slowly] Ive been better.
Max [to Lara] The X-ray showed that the bullet hasnt penetrated very far in. Were taking him to theatre now, it should just be a simple case of removing it. But, knowing Patrick, theres bound to be complications.
Patrick [groggy] Ha, ha.
Lara [grins, takes hold of his hand] Good luck. Ill come and see you after the op if youre lucky.
Patrick [slowly] Youd better. And remember you owe me a drink.
* Lara smiles a worried smile as she watches Patrick being wheeled into the lift. The doors close*
Scene Fifteen
* In Holby A&E *
Anna [to elderly patient] OK Mrs Hamilton, a doctor should be with you in a minute, sorry to keep you waiting.
* Anna walks out of the cubicle and draws the curtain. Colette bumps into her *
Colette Oh, sorry Anna. Ah, while Ive got you here, I need to ask you something.
Anna [writing in patients notes, half-concentrating] Yeah, fire away.
Colette Well, you probably know better than I do about relationships in this hospital.
Anna [looking up, grinning] Yeah?
Colette Well, are Lara and Patrick, you know, together?
Anna [grins] Yeah mate, you could say that. Hey, did you hear about the other night, apparently they went out and
Colette [interrupts] YES, OK, thank you Anna! I dont need all the gory details! Did you know Holly is here for a visit?
Anna Yeah, I bumped into her earlier [Pause] Ah, I see what you mean. She still likes Patrick, doesnt she?
Colette Erm, looks like we could have a sticky situation on our hands, yes. OK, thanks for the info. Ah, here are the notes for Mr Granger in cubicle four. [Hands Anna notes] Hes got a cut in his hand that could do with some stitches.
Anna [looks at notes, less than enthusiastic] Er, yeah great, thanks mate. Anything else I can do for your Majesty?
Colette [mocking thoughtfulness] Ah, well now that youve asked, you could
Anna [interrupting, grins] I thought slavery was illegal?!
* Colette smiles. Anna walks off to cubicle four *
Scene Sixteen
* Lara is at the drinks machine, getting a bottle of water. She picks up the bottle and starts to walk off, but she catches sight of Comfort *
Lara [calls out] Hey, Comfort! [Jogs towards her]
Comfort Oh, hi hows Patrick, is he OK?
Lara Oh, hes in theatre right now.
Comfort How long till hes out?
Lara They said around 20 minutes when I last asked. Its good news though the bullet didnt penetrate that deep into his leg, so Im just waiting around now. Im hoping I can get off my shift early so I can see himoh, you know that guy who shot him, the idiot whats his name again?
Comfort Mick, yeah - what about him?
Lara Yeah, well do you know if the police have questioned him or anything yet?
Comfort Sorry, I aint sure.
Lara Yeahwell I damn well hope they do. It cant be legal, you know shooting rabbits in a public wood. Was he out of his mind? I just dont get some people, I really dont.
Comfort Ill try and find out for you. Id best be off though, theyll be wondering where I am take it easy, yeah?
Lara Yeah, Ill try. Cheers.
Comfort [walking off, then turning around and walking backwards] Oh, and Lara, tell Grumpy to get better soon, OK? [Winks, then turns and walks off]
* Lara turns to walk back to the Emergency Department when Duffy sees her. *
Duffy Oh, Lara, I was told to tell you Patricks back from theatre, earlier than expected.
Lara [suddenly worried, full of questions] Oh, how is he, did it go OK, were there any problems?
Duffy Lara, the operation went fine. Hes just recovering from the anaesthetic up in the ward now.
Lara [relieved, smiling] OK, good. [Hopeful] Duffy, is it OK if I knock off early so I can go and see him?
Duffy [looks at watch] OhOK, I suppose so.
Lara [smiles] Thanks.
* Lara sets off at a half-run towards the stairs *
Scene Seventeen
* In Holby A&E *
Colette [sees Duffy] Duffy, sorry have you got a minute?
Duffy Er, yes, better make it quick though. [Looks around the waiting room] Its getting busy in here. Were rushed off our feet.
Colette Whats the score with Patrick?
Duffy Oh, hes out of theatre now hes up in the ward. [Looks around again, half-concentrating] Lara finished early so she could go and see him just when this place is overflowing. [Calls to Dillon] Dillon, can you see to that young boy Paul Rogers in cubicle 6?
Colette Ah, so Laras with him now?
Duffy Yes. Why, is there a problem?
Colette [thoughtful] - Um, slightly. Ive got to tell Holly how Patrick is[lowers her voice] She still has feelings for him.
Duffy [amazed] What?! But Patricks with Lara, isnt he?
Colette I know, I know. But what if Holly wants to see him now? Shes bound to.
Duffy [half-concentrating] UmI dont know, just try and keep Lara and Holly apart the last thing we need is a catfight.
Colette So what do I tell Holly?
Duffy [getting annoyed] I dont know, tell her she can see him later perhaps Lara will be gone by then.
Colette I can see this isnt going to work somebodys going to get hurt.
Duffy [agitated] Yes, well Colette it isnt really up to us to sort it out for them. Now, if youll excuse me[walking off] Mrs Peterson, if youd like to come this way
* Colette gives Duffy a look, then walks off towards the relatives room. *
Scene Eighteen
*Holly is still sitting in the relatives room. She looks at her watch worriedly, picks up a magazine and flicks through it. She tries to read but, unable to concentrate, throws it back onto the table in frustration, sits back in her chair and sighs. Colette enters the room. *
Holly [looking up, alert] Colette, sorry is there any news on Patrick?
Colette [smiles] I was just coming to tell you. Hes fine Holly, hes just come back from theatre 10 minutes ago the bullet didnt burst an artery so its just going to be down to the healing process now.
Holly [relieved, brief smile] Oh, thank goodnessis it OK if I go and see him now?
Colette [smile fading] Um, Im not sureperhaps it would be best if you went a little later, when hes had a chance to recover from the anaesthetic.
Holly [disappointed] Oh. Um, OK then. But Ill be able to see him soon?
Colette Er, yes, it shouldnt be too long. Try not to worry the worst part is over.
Holly [worried smile] Yeah, I know. Thanks Colette.
Colette [smiles] Ill be around if you need me, OK?
* Holly nods, Colette leaves the room *
Scene Nineteen
*Lara walks through the ward searching for Patricks side-room. She reaches it, looks through the door window and sees him sleeping. Her worried face softens *
Lara [to a passing nurse] Er, excuse me? Is it OK if I can see Patrick? [Points to room]
Nurse Oh, yes sure. Hes still a bit sleepy though.
Lara [smiles] OK, thanks.
* Lara puts her hand on the door knob, turns it and opens the door, which creaks loudly. Patrick stirs *
Lara [smiles] Hello you. Oh, sorry creaky door.
* Patrick awakens, and grunts *
Lara [seriously] How are you feeling?
Patrick Like Ive been shot in the leg
Lara [smiles weakly, after a pause] I was worried about you, you know.
* Lara slings her jacket over the back of a chair and sits down at the bedside *
Patrick [cocky] Worried about me? Pah, there was no need nothing I couldnt survive.
Lara [grins, plays Patricks game] Oh, yeah sorry. I forgot, were Patrick Superstar Spiller now, arent we?
Patrick Yep, thats just about the jist of it.
* Lara smiles *
Patrick [after a pause, serious] Larathanks. For finding me.
Lara [grins] Any time.
* Lara takes hold of Patricks hand *
Patrick Hey, dont get too soppy on me! I mean, I know women cant keep their hands of me but
Lara [grins] Yeah, yeah. Ill have to deflate your head with a pin if youre not careful. One thing this injury hasnt damaged is your ego!
* Still holding Patricks hand, Lara looks up at the glass wall separating the main ward from Patricks room. Her smile fades and she looks puzzled. *
Patrick [seeing her face] What is it?
Lara [still looking out of the wall] Ohtheres a woman staring at us from outside
* Sure enough, a woman stares in through the glass, her eyes fixated on the two hands of Patrick and Lara clasped together, looking bewildered, confused and in a dazeIt was Holly *
Patrick Oh, shes probably looking at me
Lara Ha, I doubt it. [Looks up at Holly again] Im gonna go and see what she wants.
* Lara lets go of Patricks hand and stands up. Holly, upon seeing Lara move, snaps out of her daze and sees Lara walking towards the door. Embarrassed, she turns away. *
Lara [closing door behind her] Um, excuse me?
* Holly turns around to face Lara, and forces a fake smile. *
Lara Can I help you? I noticed you looking at us.
Holly Oh, sorry[blurts] Who are you?
Lara Im Dr. Stone, Lara. [Pauses, frowns] Are you here to see him? [Nods towards Patricks room]
Holly [looking straight at Lara] I came to see Patrick, yes.
Lara Are you a friend, relative?
Holly [taking deep breath] A friend.
Lara OKif you tell me your name I can tell Patrick youre here.
Holly [sternly] Oh, I dont think that would be a good idea.
Lara [folding her arms, suspicious] Sorry, Im not with you.
Holly Its been a while since Ive seen him, it might, you know, shock him a bit.
Lara [sternly] Look, if youre messing me around I suggest you quit while youre ahead because-
Holly [closing eyes, interrupting] Im not messing anyone around.
Lara [annoyed, raising voice] Well, do you want to see him or not?!
Holly [firm] Yes.
Lara [contemptuously] Well whats your name then?!
Holly [reluctantly] Holly.
Lara [calms down] Thank you.
* Lara walks to the door and opens it, holding it open *
Lara Patrick, Ive got a visitor for you.
* Holly walks into the room and smiles *
Holly Hello Dr. Spiller.
Patrick [looks up immediately, shocked] Holly?!
Scene Twenty
* In Holby A&E Colette is carrying a packet of pills. She walks past the relatives room and sees Anna *
Colette Anna? Could you check on Holly in there, Im just going to put these pills away.
Anna Yeah, OK.
*Anna opens the relatives room door and peers around. Three people are there, but no Holly. *
Anna Sorry, excuse me? Was there a woman in here recently? Long light brown hair, blue blouse?
Woman Yes, there was about 15 minutes ago.
Anna OK, thanks.
* Anna closes the door and walks to Colette who is rummaging through a cupboard. *
Anna Colette, shes not in there.
Colette What? She must be.
Anna [obviously not knowing the situation] Well dont worry, she could have just gone to the loo, or gone to get a coffee or something
Colette [knowingly, walking off] Or gone to see a certain injured person. [To Duffy] Duffy, have you seen Holly?
Duffy [writing on a clipboard] Yes, shes gone to see Patrick.
Colette [alarmed] What?!
Duffy [looking up, surprised by Colettes reaction] I told her she could go, she asked. What was I supposed to say, No?
Colette [with disbelief] The answer to that is probably yes, actually. There is the minor detail that Lara is up there with him.
Duffy [continues writing] Well, shes going to find out sooner or later anyway.
Colette [sarcastic] Great. Welcome back Holly, Patricks just been shot but not only that hes in a relationship with the new SHO. Oops, sorry forgot to tell you earlier!
Duffy [looking up at Colette] Why are you so worked up about this anyway?
Colette [getting angry] I wouldnt normally be, but its her first visit back after leaving with some very bad memories of Holby, and now shes most likely going to leave with more.
