*Patrick lies in bed asleep. He is awoken by the phone ringing. He groans*

 Patrick - OK, OK! What lunatic rings at this time in the morning?!

 *Answers phone*

 Patrick [annoyed] - Yes, what d'ya want?

 Lara - Hi, it's me.

 Patrick - Oh, hi, sorry. There'd better be a good excuse for this rude awakening!

 Lara - Ah, yeah - you see, there is a little favour I was going to ask...

 Patrick - Here comes the bombshell.

 Lara - A friend of mine, she lives in the country, and well, she's kinda desperate...

 Patrick - Tell her to get out more.

 Lara [grinning] - No, not that sort of desperate. She's got a fence and the whole thing collapsed last night after the storm...and, well...I kinda promised that I knew someone who could fix it.

 Patrick - Oh great, thanks Lara - that's just what I wanted on my morning off.

 Lara - Yeah, well she didn't really want the sheep roaming around wild in her back garden any longer...oh, come on Patrick, please? I might take you out tonight if you do.

 Patrick [giving in] Do I have a choice?

 Lara [sounding happy] Knew you couldnt resist.  The address is 3 Brumley Road, near Wormley Wood, you can get to the garden by going around the side of the house. See you at 1pm for the shift I guess?

 Patrick - Yeah OK. Love you.

 Lara - You too.

 *Patrick puts receiver down*

 Scene Two

*Meanwhile, back at Holby, a young woman in her mid-twenties walks in through the entrance.  She has long brown hair tied back in a ponytail, and is wearing a pale blue blouse.  As she walks in she stops for a minute, glances around and smiles to herself.  She walks towards the reception area, then turns to look at the waiting room.  She looks at the scrolling LED display Waiting time 5 hours.  She grins and says to herself Some things dont change then!.  Jack notices her and taps her on the shoulder *

 Jack Um, excuse me are you looking for someone?

 * The woman swings around.  Jack looks at her intently.  Max walks through the duble doors towards reception *

 Jack Hang ondo I know you?  You know, Im sure I.

 * Max looks towards them and, upon seeing the woman, walks up to them *

 Max Holly!

 Holly Max!  At least someone hasnt forgotten me around here!

 Max [looking at Jack] Oh, for heavens sake Jack.

 Jack OhHolly!  [Has a look of sudden realisation on his face]  Yeah, I remember you!  You were the one who got a bit too much attention from that anaesthetist, eh?

 * Holly stops smiling and, being uncomfortable, looks to the floor.  Max glares at Jack, who is still grinning oblivious as to the problem with what he just said *

 Max [cold/angry] Jack, havent you got work to do?

 Jack [smile fading] What?  What have I done?  [Tuts and walks off]

 Max Sorry about that Holly.  Doesnt think before he opens that rather oversized mouth of his.

 Holly Nah, it doesnt matter.

 [pause]

 Max So, hows life been away from Holby?

 * They walk into his office and the door closes behind them *

 Holly Yeah, its been pretty good actually.  Though German food isnt all that appetising!  Nah, its been refreshing to get away.  Im back in England for a few weeks, visiting family and friends thought Id pop by to see how youre all coping without me!

 Max Oh, were coping absolutely fine without you, like you had never left.  [Grins]  Kidding.  Where are you working?

 Holly The Berndorf Krankenhaus not as nice as Holby though!

 Max I should hope so!

 Holly So, hows Pa

 * They are interrupted by Dillon who pokes his head around the door *

 Dillon Hi, um, sorry Max, youre needed in resus.  Female, RTA, massive internal bleeding.

 Max [to Holly] Oh, OK.  Holly, Ill have to leave you for a while.  You can get a drink or something.

 Holly Yeah, sure.  Thanks Max.

 * Max nods and rushes out.  Holly leaves the office, gets herself a coffee and sits and reads a magazine *

 Scene Three

* Patrick parks his car outside the cottage of Laras friend it is in a secluded road.  He rings the doorbell *

 Patrick Hello?  Hello?  [knocks door]  Anyone in?

 * There is no answer *

 Patrick [annoyed] Ill take that as a no then.  [Sarcastically]  Hey, dont worry Ive come to fix your fence on my morning off but dont bother to be in.  Maybe Ill even make myself a cup of tea using the rainwater and discuss politics with the grass.

 * Patrick walks around the side of the house to the back garden carrying a rather new-looking, unused tool kit.  He sees the fence in its mangled state.  He puts his kit down and starts to fiddle with it *

 Patrick How do you open this thing?  [Annoyed]  I mean, youd think theyd manufacture it so you can actually open it.

 * Eventually he succeeds and starts to try and get the fence from its mutilated state.  A faint sound of banging can be heard in the distance.  There is woodland backing onto the garden almost immediately.

 The banging gets louder.  Curiosity gets the better of him, and he leaves his handiwork and climbs over the fence to see if he can find where the banging is coming from.  He walks into the woodland for a few minutes.  He hears a scuffling, then the sound of someone running across the ground amongst the trees, although he cannot see them *

 Patrick Hello?  Anyone there?  Im

 * A loud bang is heard and his words are cut off by a sharp, searing pain the pain of something penetrating his leg.  He starts to groan, and collapses onto the wet, saturated ground.

 He had been shot*

 Scene Four

* Back at Holby A&E *

 Lara [to patient] There you go.  Come back and get the stitches out in a week, it shouldnt take long to heal.

 * The patient thanks her, Lara smiles and walks to the wipe-clean board to erase the patients name from the list.  Duffy walks up to Lara. *

 Duffy Oh, Lara youre going in 5 minutes OK?  Comfort and Nikki should be back by then.

 Lara [bemused] Sorry?

 Duffy Youre observing the paramedics today, remember?

 Lara Oh, damn, yeah.  I forgot.  UmOK, Ill be ready.

 * Lara goes to get her fluorescent green and yellow jacket.  Comfort appears. *

 Comfort Hey Lara, you ready to come riding?

 Lara [looks at watch] Hi, yeah.  Im just waiting to see if theres any sign of Patrick, he said hed be here at 1pm cos his shift starts then.  [Scans the surrounding area]  He should be here by now. [Annoyed] I wanted to talk to him

 Comfort [grinning] - Hey, isnt there something going on between you two?  [Teasing] I didnt think he was your type.

 Lara [grins] Its nothing that concerns you.  I had him doing some DIY this morning fixing a fence for a mate of mine.

 Comfort Ooh, romantic!  He must have it bad for you if hes already doing things like that for you!

 Lara  - Never you mind.  Now, are we gonna get going or not?

 Comfort Yeah, OK.  [Leans towards Lara]  Oh, and just a bit of advice you might wanna take that jacket off until youre in the ambulancelover-boy could appear any minute it might put him off you[winks and walks ahead]

 Lara [shouts after her] Ha-ha!

 * Lara follows Comfort *

 Scene Five

* Patrick lies on the ground in the wood you can see clearly where he has been shot as his trousers have a small circular hold in them.  Blood is dripping out of the wound.  He is groaning with pain.  A man of about forty, wearing scruffy jeans and carrying a gun, runs down towards him. *

 Man Oh my God [kneels down beside Patrick and puts his gun on the ground]  Hello?  Can you hear me?  Speak to me!

 * Patrick is falling unconcious *

 Man [panicking] Umphone, phone!  [searches his jacket pockets frantically]  DAMN!  [stands up]  Um, OK mate Im going to get help.  Umdont moveIll be back soonoh my God

 * The man runs off up the slope through the trees.  Suddenly, he gets his foot wedged under a tree root and falls, cracking his head on the ground and cutting it *

 Man Argh!  [grimaces and puts his hand to the wound there is blood on it]

 * The man struggles to get up but he cannot.  He tries again but gives up.  Then, he feels a lump in his trouser pocket.  He puts his hand in and retrieves a battered phone.  *

 Man [with relief] Thank God!  [looks at the display the battery is almost dead].  Ohplease, dont cut out on me.

 * With his quivering fingers he keys in 999 *

 Man [hurriedly] Hello, um, ambulance please.  Im in Wormley Wood, the east side quick, hurry theres a man, hes been

 * The phone cuts out *

 Scene Six

* Lara, Nikki and Comfort are sitting in the ambulance eating some lunch. *

 Lara [staring at the wall] I wonder if Patrick is at the hospital yet.

 Comfort [grins] Ah, were back on the subject of grumpy guts again!  Man, Im telling you theres definitely something going on between you two!  Youve got him on the brain!

 Nikki [surprised] What?  [Guffaws] Lara and Patrick an item?  [Face breaks into a grin and turns to look at Lara]  My, my.  Wonders never ceasehes not exactly a catch.

 Lara [scornfully] Yeah, well lets just say I was more than slightly surprised to hear you were with Jackof all people.

 Nikki [smile fades] What are you saying, that Im a freak or something?

 Lara [with mock surprise and sarcasm] Thats funny I thought you were just implying that about me.

 Comfort [sensing a cat-fight in the pipeline] Ladies, calm down OK?

 * A voice comes over the radio *

 Voice Holby Control to 3018, over.

 Nikki 3018, receiving, over.

 Voice Theres a call to Wormley Wood, casualties unknown.  Youll have to do a search on the east side.  Police assistance will be sent if required.

 Nikki OK, all received and mobile.

 Comfort OK, lets go girls!

 Lara Hang on, where did they say it was again?

 Comfort Wormley Wood why?

 Lara [slightly worried] Oh, its just thats where Patrick was this morning fixing the fenceon the east side

* Back at Holby A&E *

 Holly And[puts her pen down]Ive finished.

 Duffy Thats great Holly, thanks.  Could you just-

 * Voice comes over the receiver *

 Voice 3018 to Holby, over.

 Duffy [to Holly] Hang on.  [picks up handset]  Holby A&E, receiving, over.

 Voice Duffy, its Nikki.  Weve got a male with a puncture wound in the right leg from being shot.  ETA 15-20 minutes.  Duffy hes done it again.  Its Patrick.

 Holly [exclaims] Patrick?!

 Duffy [looks at Holly, concerned] Um, OK Nikki, all received.  Over.  [Replaces handset]

 Holly [very worried] Oh my God.  But, I meansurelyit cant be him

 Duffy Holly, calm down.

 Holly ButI cant believe it.

 Duffy I think, Holly, you should go and get a cup of tea or something, and sit down.

 Holly But

 Duffy Holly, come on.

 * Duffy leads Holly to the relatives room *

 Scene Twelve

* Patrick is wheeled into resus on a trolley.  Max rushes to the trolley. *

 Max Right, whatve we got?  [looks at patient] Patrick?!

 Lara [looking worried] Yeah, hes got a puncture wound to the right leg hes been shot.

 Max [still looking at Patrick] Well, he sure doesnt waste any time.

 Lara [annoyed] Thats not funny.

 Max [looks up at Lara]  - Sorry.

 * The trolley is wheeled into one of the bays and grinds to a halt *

 Max [checking Patricks eyes] OK, his pupils are responsive.  Hang on, I think hes coming round.  [To Patrick] Patrick, its Max.  Youre in Holby A&E.

 * Patrick still has his eyes shut but you can hear a groan from under his oxygen mask *

 Max [to Lara] OK, good.  Right, Im gonna need 10mg of morphine.  Dillon can you arrange an X-ray ASAP [inspecting wound in Patricks leg] Were gonna have to find out just how far the bullet is lodged.

 Lara [passes the morphine to Max] What do you think?  The outlook I mean.

 Max Well, theyre going to have to operate I should imagine.  We dont know how much damage has been done.  I think its missed the artery though hed been in a worse state if it had.

 Dillon [putting phone down] OK Max, X-ray is free we can take him up now.

 Max OK, thanks Dillon.  [To Patrick] Patrick were just going to X-ray that leg of yours.

 * Lara looks at Patrick worriedly.  Max sees her. *

 Max I think his chances are good Lara from what I can see, the bullet doesnt seem to be that far in.

 Lara [with faint worried smile] Yeahbut it doesnt stop you worrying though.

 Max Look, why dont you take a break, have a drink or something?

 Lara Yeah, OK.  [To Patrick] Hang in there Spiller.  [kisses him on the forehead, pauses, then watches him be wheeled out through the double doors to X-ray]

 Scene Thirteen

*Holly is sitting in the relatives room, holding a mug of coffee and staring at it.  Colette walks past outside and looks in through the window and continues walking.  Then, obviously recognising Holly, she walks back and into the room. *

 Colette [smiling] Hello stranger!

 Holly [with a weak smile] Hey

 Colette [still smiling] I was just walking past and saw your face in here, I was[sees Hollys miserable face] Hey, whats wrong?

 Holly [snapping out of daze] Oh, its nothing, honestly.  Sorry Colette, I should have been more glad to see you.

 Colette [smiles, sitting down besides Holly] Oh, dont worry about it.  [Turning serious] Now are you going to tell me whats really bothering you?

 Holly [weak smile] Oh, you dont want to listen to my problems.

 Colette Holly, Im all ears.

 Holly [after a pause, sighing] Its Patrick.  Hes been brought in, hes been shot or something, and Im worried sick.

 Colette [shocked] Oh no, Holly Im sorry.  I didnt know, Ive only just got here for my shift.

 [Pause]

 Holly Duffy told me a few minutes ago that hes been taken to X-ray.  [Pause] I dont know Colette, I just feel like I should be doing something, but I cant.

 Colette [quietly] Hollyyou still have feelings for Patrick, dont you?

 Holly [staring at coffee cup, gets more emotional throughout the following speech] I just keep thinking about all the times Ive hurt him, all the times I kept refusing his help.  We were together at Med school, but I broke it off because I didnt think it was working he was too arrogant, self-centred.  [Short pause]  I think he took it worse than me.  And ever since then, Ive never really got over him.  I was too stubborn, I kept side-stepping my emotions, I kept telling myself it would never work, him and I.  [Pause] And the stupid thing is, I guess it was me who was self-centred I kept knocking him back, without thinking about his feelings.  He was always there for me its wonder he never gave up.  [Pause]  And thenand then there was Tomand ifand if Patrick hadnt found me

 * Holly bursts into tears.  Colette turns around and hugs her *

 Colette [with watery eyes, affected by Hollys words] Sshhh, come on Holly.  Its OK.  And Im sure Patrick is going to be OK too.

 Holly [still teary-eyed] I just want to tell himto tell him Im sorry.  [Pause]  He saved my life Colette how can I ever repay him?

 Scene Fourteen

* Lara is walking along near reception, when she catches sight of a trolley being wheeled towards the lift.  She heads towards it, but runs into a group of drunken football fans *

 Football fan [grinning stupidly, eyeing Lara up and down] Ey up, sexy!  Wanna get jiggy with me?!

 Lara [wary, looks disgustedly at the fan] Erm, yeah maybe some other time[becomes annoyed, to the other fans] Look, excuse me, do you think I could actually get past?!

 * Lara rushes past towards the trolley *

 Football fan [shouting, drunkenly] You know ya want to, baby!  You just cant resist!

 Lara [under her breath, out of earshot from the fans] You wish.

 * Lara reaches the trolley *

Lara [to Max, worried] How is he?

 Max Why not ask him yourself?

 Lara [to Patrick] Hey Spiller, how you feeling?

 Patrick [removes oxygen mask, speaks slowly] Ive been better.

 Max [to Lara] The X-ray showed that the bullet hasnt penetrated very far in.  Were taking him to theatre now, it should just be a simple case of removing it.  But, knowing Patrick, theres bound to be complications.

 Patrick [groggy] Ha, ha.

 Lara [grins, takes hold of his hand] Good luck.  Ill come and see you after the op if youre lucky.

 Patrick [slowly] Youd better.  And remember you owe me a drink.

 * Lara smiles a worried smile as she watches Patrick being wheeled into the lift.  The doors close*

 Scene Fifteen

* In Holby A&E *

 Anna [to elderly patient] OK Mrs Hamilton, a doctor should be with you in a minute, sorry to keep you waiting.

 * Anna walks out of the cubicle and draws the curtain.  Colette bumps into her *

 Colette Oh, sorry Anna.  Ah, while Ive got you here, I need to ask you something.

 Anna [writing in patients notes, half-concentrating] Yeah, fire away.

 Colette Well, you probably know better than I do about relationships in this hospital.

 Anna [looking up, grinning] Yeah?

 Colette Well, are Lara and Patrick, you know, together?

 Anna [grins] Yeah mate, you could say that.  Hey, did you hear about the other night, apparently they went out and

 Colette [interrupts] YES, OK, thank you Anna!  I dont need all the gory details!  Did you know Holly is here for a visit?

 Anna Yeah, I bumped into her earlier  [Pause] Ah, I see what you mean.  She still likes Patrick, doesnt she?

 Colette Erm, looks like we could have a sticky situation on our hands, yes.  OK, thanks for the info.  Ah, here are the notes for Mr Granger in cubicle four.  [Hands Anna notes]  Hes got a cut in his hand that could do with some stitches.

 Anna [looks at notes, less than enthusiastic] Er, yeah great, thanks mate.  Anything else I can do for your Majesty?

 Colette [mocking thoughtfulness] Ah, well now that youve asked, you could

 Anna [interrupting, grins] I thought slavery was illegal?!

 * Colette smiles.  Anna walks off to cubicle four *

 Scene Sixteen

* Lara is at the drinks machine, getting a bottle of water.  She picks up the bottle and starts to walk off, but she catches sight of Comfort *

 Lara [calls out] Hey, Comfort!  [Jogs towards her]

 Comfort Oh, hi hows Patrick, is he OK?

 Lara Oh, hes in theatre right now.

 Comfort How long till hes out?

 Lara They said around 20 minutes when I last asked.  Its good news though the bullet didnt penetrate that deep into his leg, so Im just waiting around now.  Im hoping I can get off my shift early so I can see himoh, you know that guy who shot him, the idiot whats his name again?

 Comfort Mick, yeah - what about him?

 Lara Yeah, well do you know if the police have questioned him or anything yet?

 Comfort Sorry, I aint sure.

 Lara Yeahwell I damn well hope they do.  It cant be legal, you know shooting rabbits in a public wood.  Was he out of his mind?  I just dont get some people, I really dont.

 Comfort Ill try and find out for you.  Id best be off though, theyll be wondering where I am take it easy, yeah?

 Lara Yeah, Ill try.  Cheers.

 Comfort [walking off, then turning around and walking backwards] Oh, and Lara, tell Grumpy to get better soon, OK?  [Winks, then turns and walks off]

 * Lara turns to walk back to the Emergency Department when Duffy sees her. *

 Duffy Oh, Lara, I was told to tell you Patricks back from theatre, earlier than expected.

 Lara [suddenly worried, full of questions] Oh, how is he, did it go OK, were there any problems?

 Duffy Lara, the operation went fine.  Hes just recovering from the anaesthetic up in the ward now.

 Lara [relieved, smiling] OK, good.  [Hopeful]  Duffy, is it OK if I knock off early so I can go and see him?

 Duffy [looks at watch] OhOK, I suppose so.

 Lara [smiles] Thanks.

 * Lara sets off at a half-run towards the stairs *

* In Holby A&E *

 Colette [sees Duffy] Duffy, sorry have you got a minute?

 Duffy Er, yes, better make it quick though. [Looks around the waiting room]  Its getting busy in here.  Were rushed off our feet.

 Colette Whats the score with Patrick?

 Duffy Oh, hes out of theatre now hes up in the ward.  [Looks around again, half-concentrating]  Lara finished early so she could go and see him just when this place is overflowing.  [Calls to Dillon]  Dillon, can you see to that young boy Paul Rogers in cubicle 6?

 Colette Ah, so Laras with him now?

 Duffy Yes.  Why, is there a problem?

 Colette [thoughtful] - Um, slightly.  Ive got to tell Holly how Patrick is[lowers her voice]  She still has feelings for him.

 Duffy [amazed] What?!  But Patricks with Lara, isnt he?

 Colette I know, I know.  But what if Holly wants to see him now?  Shes bound to.

 Duffy [half-concentrating] UmI dont know, just try and keep Lara and Holly apart the last thing we need is a catfight.

 Colette So what do I tell Holly?

 Duffy [getting annoyed] I dont know, tell her she can see him later perhaps Lara will be gone by then.

 Colette I can see this isnt going to work somebodys going to get hurt.

 Duffy [agitated] Yes, well Colette it isnt really up to us to sort it out for them.  Now, if youll excuse me[walking off]  Mrs Peterson, if youd like to come this way

 * Colette gives Duffy a look, then walks off towards the relatives room. *

 Scene Eighteen

*Holly is still sitting in the relatives room.  She looks at her watch worriedly, picks up a magazine and flicks through it.  She tries to read but, unable to concentrate, throws it back onto the table in frustration, sits back in her chair and sighs.  Colette enters the room. *

 Holly [looking up, alert] Colette, sorry is there any news on Patrick?

 Colette [smiles] I was just coming to tell you.  Hes fine Holly, hes just come back from theatre 10 minutes ago the bullet didnt burst an artery so its just going to be down to the healing process now.

 Holly [relieved, brief smile] Oh, thank goodnessis it OK if I go and see him now?

 Colette [smile fading] Um, Im not sureperhaps it would be best if you went a little later, when hes had a chance to recover from the anaesthetic.

 Holly [disappointed] Oh.  Um, OK then.  But Ill be able to see him soon?

 Colette Er, yes, it shouldnt be too long.  Try not to worry the worst part is over.

 Holly [worried smile] Yeah, I know.  Thanks Colette.

 Colette [smiles] Ill be around if you need me, OK?

 * Holly nods, Colette leaves the room *

 Scene Nineteen

*Lara walks through the ward searching for Patricks side-room.  She reaches it, looks through the door window and sees him sleeping.  Her worried face softens *

 Lara [to a passing nurse] Er, excuse me?  Is it OK if I can see Patrick?  [Points to room]

 Nurse Oh, yes sure.  Hes still a bit sleepy though.

 Lara [smiles] OK, thanks.

 * Lara puts her hand on the door knob, turns it and opens the door, which creaks loudly.  Patrick stirs *

 Lara [smiles] Hello you.  Oh, sorry creaky door.

 * Patrick awakens, and grunts *

 Lara [seriously] How are you feeling?

 Patrick Like Ive been shot in the leg

 Lara [smiles weakly, after a pause] I was worried about you, you know.

 * Lara slings her jacket over the back of a chair and sits down at the bedside *

 Patrick [cocky] Worried about me?  Pah, there was no need nothing I couldnt survive.

 Lara [grins, plays Patricks game] Oh, yeah sorry.  I forgot, were Patrick Superstar Spiller now, arent we?

 Patrick Yep, thats just about the jist of it.

 * Lara smiles *

 Patrick [after a pause, serious] Larathanks.  For finding me.

 Lara [grins] Any time.

 * Lara takes hold of Patricks hand *

 Patrick Hey, dont get too soppy on me!  I mean, I know women cant keep their hands of me but

 Lara [grins] Yeah, yeah.  Ill have to deflate your head with a pin if youre not careful.  One thing this injury hasnt damaged is your ego!

 * Still holding Patricks hand, Lara looks up at the glass wall separating the main ward from Patricks room.  Her smile fades and she looks puzzled. *

 Patrick [seeing her face] What is it?

 Lara [still looking out of the wall] Ohtheres a woman staring at us from outside

 * Sure enough, a woman stares in through the glass, her eyes fixated on the two hands of Patrick and Lara clasped together, looking bewildered, confused and in a dazeIt was Holly *

 Patrick Oh, shes probably looking at me

 Lara Ha, I doubt it.  [Looks up at Holly again]  Im gonna go and see what she wants.

 * Lara lets go of Patricks hand and stands up.  Holly, upon seeing Lara move, snaps out of her daze and sees Lara walking towards the door.  Embarrassed, she turns away. *

 Lara [closing door behind her] Um, excuse me?

 * Holly turns around to face Lara, and forces a fake smile. *

 Lara Can I help you?  I noticed you looking at us.

 Holly Oh, sorry[blurts]  Who are you?

 Lara Im Dr. Stone, Lara.  [Pauses, frowns]  Are you here to see him?  [Nods towards Patricks room]

 Holly [looking straight at Lara] I came to see Patrick, yes.

 Lara Are you a friend, relative?

 Holly [taking deep breath] A friend.

 Lara OKif you tell me your name I can tell Patrick youre here.

 Holly [sternly] Oh, I dont think that would be a good idea.

 Lara [folding her arms, suspicious] Sorry, Im not with you.

 Holly Its been a while since Ive seen him, it might, you know, shock him a bit.

 Lara [sternly] Look, if youre messing me around I suggest you quit while youre ahead because-

 Holly [closing eyes, interrupting] Im not messing anyone around.

 Lara [annoyed, raising voice] Well, do you want to see him or not?!

 Holly [firm] Yes.

 Lara [contemptuously] Well whats your name then?!

 Holly [reluctantly] Holly.

 Lara [calms down] Thank you.

 * Lara walks to the door and opens it, holding it open *

 Lara Patrick, Ive got a visitor for you.

 * Holly walks into the room and smiles *

 Holly Hello Dr. Spiller.

 Patrick [looks up immediately, shocked] Holly?!

 Scene Twenty

* In Holby A&E Colette is carrying a packet of pills.  She walks past the relatives room and sees Anna *

 Colette Anna?  Could you check on Holly in there, Im just going to put these pills away.

 Anna Yeah, OK.

 *Anna opens the relatives room door and peers around.  Three people are there, but no Holly. *

Anna Sorry, excuse me?  Was there a woman in here recently?  Long light brown hair, blue blouse?

 Woman Yes, there was about 15 minutes ago.

 Anna OK, thanks.

 * Anna closes the door and walks to Colette who is rummaging through a cupboard. *

Anna Colette, shes not in there.

 Colette What?  She must be.

 Anna [obviously not knowing the situation] Well dont worry, she could have just gone to the loo, or gone to get a coffee or something

 Colette [knowingly, walking off] Or gone to see a certain injured person.  [To Duffy] Duffy, have you seen Holly?

 Duffy [writing on a clipboard] Yes, shes gone to see Patrick.

 Colette [alarmed] What?!

 Duffy [looking up, surprised by Colettes reaction] I told her she could go, she asked.  What was I supposed to say, No?

 Colette [with disbelief] The answer to that is probably yes, actually.  There is the minor detail that Lara is up there with him.

 Duffy [continues writing] Well, shes going to find out sooner or later anyway.

 Colette [sarcastic] Great.  Welcome back Holly, Patricks just been shot but not only that hes in a relationship with the new SHO.  Oops, sorry forgot to tell you earlier!

 Duffy [looking up at Colette] Why are you so worked up about this anyway?

 Colette [getting angry] I wouldnt normally be, but its her first visit back after leaving with some very bad memories of Holby, and now shes most likely going to leave with more.

 Duffy [tearing a slip off a piece of paper] I know, and Im sorry that things are like this for Holly, but life goes on.  In case you didnt notice, its late, its busy and there are a lot of patients out there needing our attention.  So lets get on with the job, shall we?

* Back at Patricks room.  Holly is standing in the middle of the room and Patrick is staring at her.  Lara looks on in confusion at the back of the room.  *

 Patrick [bewildered, shocked] Hollybut, what are you doing here?  I thought you left me. [Correcting himself quickly] I mean, went to Germany

 Holly [smiles] Well, I did.  But Im back for a visit.

 Patrick [still shocked, but face breaking into a smile] I I dont know what to say.

 Holly [still smiling] Nor do I.  [Stops smiling and looks at Patricks leg]  Hows the leg?

 Patrick Oh, its fine, where did you go in Germany?

 Lara [leaning against the wall with arms folded, interrupting] Um, sorry to interrupt but how exactly are you two connected to each other?

 Holly [looking at Patrick, stumped] Um, wellwere

 Patrick [looking at Holly] Er, weshe was the SHO here before you came.

 Lara [suspicious, faking interest] Ah, I see.  [To Holly]  Whats your name again?

 Holly [looking at Lara] Holly.  Holly Miles.

 Lara [coldy] I was your replacement then I guess.

 Holly [coldly] I guess so.  And are you Patricks friend or-

 * Lara opens her mouth to speak, but Patrick interrupts*

 Patrick [raising voice] Lara

 * Lara looks at Patrick and is quiet*

 Patrick [changing the subject] Could you get me some cream cakes or something?

 Lara [smiling] Im not sure about that Patrick.

 Patrick [pleading] Oh, come on - I need cholesterol, you know!

 Lara [giving in, grinning] I suppose so, but just this once, OK?  Which ones do you want, the ones that look like mutilated flesh?

 Patrick Yeah, those are the ones.

 Lara [grins] OK Ill be back soon.

 * Lara turns and leaves the room.  The door closes, and the room falls silent.  Patrick looks up at Holly. *

 Patrick [smiles] So, long time no see.  Been killing anyone in Germany?

 Holly [grins] No Patrick, I havent.

 Patrick [smiles] Oh, pity.

 [Pause]

 Holly [turns serious] So, whos she, that Lara person?

 * Patricks smile fades and he looks slightly worried *

 Scene Twenty-Two

* Lara is walking past reception towards the exit, Anna pounces on her.*

 Anna Hey, Lara hows Grumpy?

 Lara [grins] He seems to be fine, considering hes asking for cream cakes.  I gotta go and get him some before the shops close.

 Anna [surprised] Hes after food already?!

 Lara [grins] Yeah, unfortunately it seems that even being shot in the leg, having an operation and meeting some long-lost friend doesnt put a stop to a mans appetite.  Hes up there with Holly.  Do you know her?

 Anna [smiles] Oh yeah, I know her.  She was

 Lara [rolls eyes to the sky] the SHO before I came.  [Looks at Anna] Yes, I know.

 Anna [smiles] OK, well go easy on her, yeah?  I mean, I know youre Patricks girlfriend and everything but I dont think shes properly over him.

 Lara [frowning] What do you mean?

 Anna I mean, I think she still has feelings for him.

 Lara She what?!

 Anna [shocked, realising] Oh noI thought you knew, Im sorry, I-

 Lara [concerned] - Youre saying Holly was Patricks girlfriend?!

 Anna [stuck] Um, no Im not, mate.  They never were, its just

 Lara [looking straight at Anna] Anna, tell me.  I deserve to know.

 Anna [still stuck] Umlets just say they were practically an item.  They had feelings fr each other when Holly left suddenly a few months backlook, it shouldnt really matter though, cos Patricks over her and

 Lara [concerned] Well, it didnt seem that way.  They were behaving really strangely earlier, I thought it was odd.

 Anna [worried] Look mate, it really

 Lara [getting angry, thoughtful] Yes it does matter Anna.  [Decisively] If he still has feelings for her I deserve to know.  [Sets off towards the stairs]

 Anna [calling out, worried] Lara, dontjust

 *But Lara is out of sight *

 Scene Twenty-Three

*Holly is sitting next to Patrick in his room. *

 Holly [serious] Patrick, who is she?

 Patrick [pauses, then agitated] Shes just a friend.

 Holly Oh come on Patrick, Im not stupid.  I saw you two holding hands before I came in.

 [Silence]

 Holly [takes a deep breath] Shes more than a friend, isnt she?

 Patrick No[sees Hollys face, and gives in] Yes, OK - she is.

 Holly [clearly upset] I see.  [Pause]

 Patrick [sighs] Holly, you cant have expected me to hang around forever for something that might never happen.  Ive spent God knows how long waiting for you.  [Pauses]  You left and you went to Germany, I thought that was it the end.

 Holly [upset, frustrated] I left becausebecauseoh you know why Patrick, I shouldnt have to spell it out.  [Pauses]  I didnt leave because of you and you know it.

 Patrick [after a hesitation] Do I?  How do I know you didnt leave because of me?  Youve rejected me enough times, why not again?

 Holly [upset and angry] Oh dont Patrick, just dont.  [Pause]  You knowyou know that night when youyou saved my life?  [Looks up at Patrick] Didnt it mean anything to you nothing?

 Patrick [softening, looks away] Of course it did.

 Holly But

 Patrick [interrupting] - HollyHolly, its not as easy as that.  ImIm with Lara.  I cant just drop her.

 Holly [very upset, looking away] I see.  [Looks up at Patrick with a weak smile]  Well, I guess this is it then.  I just want to say thatthat Im sorry.  For everything I did

 Patrick [interrupting, upset] Hollydont, its not

 Holly [ignoring Patrick] - and that, well[takes deep breath] I love you .  There.  I said it.  Three stupid words[stands up] But theyre worthless now.

Patrick Holly, please, stop listen to me

 * An angry Lara bursts into the room. *

 Lara [sarcastic] Well Patrick, Ive just found out about your little relationship with Holly here.  [Turning angry] So, which one do you want - me or her?

 Patrick [angry] Lara, just shut up, OK?  Just shut up.

 * Holly, overcome with emotion, leaves the room in a hurry.  Lara follows her with her eyes as the door closes hard behind Holly.  Lara turns back to Patrick, still angry. *

 Lara [stern] Whats going on?

 Patrick [looking away] Youve just gone and upset her.

 Lara Me upset her?  Dont play games with me Patrick.

 Patrick You were overreacting, charging in like that.

 Lara Overreacting, eh?  Yeah, well tell me how am I supposed to react when I find out that youre not even over your ex in fact, she wasnt even your ex, was she?  You werent even together!  [Shakes her head in disbelief]  Tell me do you love her?

 Patrick What?

 Lara You heard me, do you love her?

 Patrick Lara

 Lara [impatient] Just tell me yes or no?

 Patrick [struggling, after a pause] I told her it was over.

 Lara [softening] Good.  I mean, who does she think she is?  She cant just come back and try to reclaim you like that, its just-

 Patrick [interrupting] Lara, listen.  [They look at each other]  I care about you, you know that.  Youve been great.

 * Lara smiles weakly *

 Patrick [takes a deep breath] And I wish I didnt have to do this, butif I stayed with you in a relationship it would be wrong.  I wouldnt be true to myself, or you.  [Pause]  There are a lot of things you are never going to know, or understand, about me and Holly and now shes come backI just cant let her go again.

 * Lara is in stunned silence, staring at her hands *

 Patrick [looking at Laras face] Lara, you deserve better than me.  I cant stay with you, it wouldnt be fair.  The Patrick youve known since youve been here isnt the real Patrick. You dont even know me, you havent scraped the surface.  Only Holly can do that.  [Pause]  Im sorry.

 Lara [shocked/confused/looking anywhere except at Patrick] IImI see.  [Upset, with watery eyes]  UmI think Ill go nowsorry.

 * Lara turns and walks to the door *

 Patrick [calls] Lara

 * Lara turns around *

 Patrick Good luck.  Find someone who will look after you for me.

 * Lara, with a silent tear falling down her cheek, steals one last look at her Spiller, turns away, and leaves the room. *

* Holly is rushing towards the A&E department, wiping away tears with a tissue.  Colette ses her and rushes over. *

 Colette [concerned] Holly whats wrong?

 Holly Nothing, really.  I was just coming to say that I think Im going to leave now.  [Weak smile]  Its been a long day.

 Colette [realising] Oh, noHolly, come on, come in here.

 * Colette opens the relatives room door.  Holly walks in, sniffing.  Colette follows and closes the door.  Holly sits down, looking at the ground. *

 Colette [softly] What happened?

 Holly [looking up] I went in, told him what I felt andand he told me he doesnt want me.

 Colette [saddened, slightly surprised] Holly

 Holly [angry with herself] I should never have come back, I was so stupid.

 Colette [firmly] Listen to me Holly you were not stupid.

 * Holly shakes her head and stares at the wall.  *

 Colette Did he give you a reason?

 Holly He saidhe said he couldnt drop Lara.

 Colette [carefully] Ah.  So youve met her?  Im sorry, I would have told you, only I didnt want to upset you.  I thought it was best you found out through Patrick.

 Holly [wiping eyes with a tissue] Nah, its not your fault.  It was mine.  I shouldnt have just come back, expecting him to be waiting for me, like nothing ever happened and like life doesnt go on.  [Pause]  Whats she like?

 Colette Who, Lara?

 * Holly nods. *

 Colette Wellshes determinedstrongcaring.  Shes similar to you in some ways, in others shes totally different.  Theres one thing she hasnt got that you have though...

 Holly What?

 Colette [slowly] Look.  Holly what was it that kept you from being in a relationship with Patrick?

 [Pause]

 Holly UmI dont know, it was just[Takes a deep breath].  I was too stubborn.  I wouldnt give inI didnt want to get hurt.  He was the same.

 Colette [encouraging] Uh huh.

 Holly When he tried to make a move, I told myself I couldnt go back into a relationship with him - it hadnt worked out at Med School so it probably wouldnt now.  [Sighs]  I just ignored what I really felt, told myself it was wrong, a bad idea.  I tried to find some justification for me knocking him back, to prove to myself I suppose, that I shouldnt try again with him And to do that, I kept focusing on his bad points - like his arrogance

 Colette [smiles] We know that so well.

 Holly [smiles, then it fades] - So Id yell at him tell him he was insensitive, emotionally dysfunctional.  [Pause]  And thats what caused all the arguments between us.  [Looks up, sighs again]  I wanted to be with him, but I wouldnt let myself in case it didnt work out and Id get hurt.

 [Pause]

 Colette [softly] Sounds to me like you were looking for the perfect manBut now youve beaten the stubbornness, perhaps there is a chance for you and Patrick.

 Holly [disbelieving] Colette, hes just told me hes not interested.

 Colette [smiles, softly] Remember, Patrick was stubborn too.  Hes just taking a bit longer to admit to it.  Holly, hes had a rough time today hes been shot in the leg, youve just come back into his life and now hes got to let down Lara who, theres no point in denying it, he cares about a lot.  But dont give up on him, not now youve come this far.

 * There is a knock at the door.  Dillon pokes his head around the corner. *

 Dillon Um, is there a [quickly looks at a piece of paper he is holding, then looks up] Holly Miles in here?

 Holly [looks up] Yes?

 Dillon [smiles] Ah.  [Enters the room]  This note has just been sent for you, from Patrick.

 * Dillon hands Holly a folded piece of paper, with the words Holly Miles on it. *

 Holly [surprised] Thanks.

 * Dillon smiles and leaves the room.  Holly, eyeing the note, unfolds the paper.  It reads Holly, you owe me a drink, remember?!  Hollys face breaks into a smile, and she turns to look at Colette. *

 Holly Can I go, I mean, can I see him?

 Colette [smiles] Of course you can.

 Holly Thanks Colette.  For everything.

 * They hug *

 Colette Good luck.

 * Holly smiles, then leaves the room. *

 Scene Twenty-Five

*lara is in Holby A&E.  Her face is red, from having been crying.  She looks at her watch it is 9pm.  She walks up to the reception desk.  Jack is on the computer, playing an internet game instead of working. *

 Jack [concentrating, tapping a key frantically] Come on, come onYES!  500 whoppers!  [Punches air]  Whos da man?!  [Grins proudly at the computer screen]

 Lara [coughs] Ahem.

 Jack [looks up, grin fades, clicks the minimise button] Oh, sorrynot a word to Charlie, eh?  [Sees Laras face] Are you OK?

 Lara [bemused] What?  [Realises]  Oh[wipes her face] Im fine.  Is Duffy around?

 Jack Havent seen her, nope.

 Lara Oh, I need to see her about something.

 Jack Hey, hows the Doc?  I mean, first he goes and gets beaten up by some psycho in a wood, then he goes and gets shot by another psycho in a wood if you ask me he should steer clear of any more trees unless he has a death wish.  It was his own stupid fault hey, shouldnt you be up there with him, you being his girlfriend and all that?

 Lara [glaring at Jack, angry] Jack, when will you learn to keep your big trap SHUT?!

 Jack [confused, defensive] Sorry mate, I was only asking

 Lara [angry, yelling] You just love it dont you?  Making fun of everyone else, like youre so high and mighty.  Think you know it all.  Well, Ill tell you something Jack Vincent you dont.  You dont know the half of it!

 * People sitting in the waiting room, which has gone slightly quiet, are staring towards te reception desk. *

 Tony [walking over, intervening] Erm, excuse me guys, could we keep the shout-o-meter reading down please?  Lara, cool off.

 Lara [fuming, shaking head] Oh, dont worry Ive had my say.  [Looks scornfully at Jack] You insensitive prat.

 * Jack is left staring with his mouth open after Lara, who walks off at high speed towards the exit, through the automatic doors.  Tony puts his hand on Jacks shoulder. *

 Tony Nice one, mate.

 Jack [confused] What?!  All I did wasI mean, women!

 * Jack looks around but Tony is gone.  He shrugs, then turns back to the computer sreen and starts clicking. *

 Jack [concentrating] Come on, 65 more pointsYEAH!  [Grins]  Level 38!  Get in there!

 * People in the waiting room turn again to give Jack weird looks.  Jack notices, and his grin fades. *

 Jack [sheepishly] Oh, sorry.  Sorry.

*Holly knocks on the door of Patricks side ward and enters.  Patrick looks up as Holly closes the door.  She turns around and Patrick smiles.  Holly, who is slightly uncomfortable, smiles back. *

 Patrick So you decided to come back, couldnt resist.

 Holly [grins] Oh, Im sure I could have done.  [Teasing]  But I could always turn around and go again if you want

 Patrick Nah, stay.  Itll save me the hassle of having to call you back.

 * Holly smiles, then it slowly fades. *

 Holly Patrick, Im so sorry.

 Patrick What for?

 Holly For leaving you here, and bombing off to Germany.  I shouldnt have gone.

 Patrick It was understandable.  Youd had a rough time with T- [trails off]

 Holly [looks away] Tom, yes.  [Looks back at Patrick] You can say his name.  But it was no excuse.

 Patrick Yes it wasOh, things must be back to normal were arguing again.

 * Holly smiles *

 Patrick Come on, sit down.

 * Holly puts her bag down and sits next to Patricks bed. *

 Holly Hows your leg?

 Patrick Oh, still there.

 Holly What happened?

 Patrick [sighs] I was fixing a fence for a friend of La[hesitates, rubs forehead]  I was fixing a fence for a friend of Laras.

 Holly And?

 Patrick And I got shot in the woodland by some maniac who thought he was handy with a gun and a few bullets.  I mean, do I look like a rabbit?

 Holly [grins, confused] What?!

 Patrick Oh, thats what he was trying to shoot apparently.  The idiot must be blind.

 Holly [mocking thoughtfulness, grins] Oh, I dont know about that Patrick.  Now youve mentioned it Im beginning to see a resemblance

 Patrick Ha-ha.

 * Holly grins, then after a pause Patrick continues. *

 Patrick [wary] Holly, I wanted to talk to youabout Lara.

 Holly [grin fades, uncomfortable] OKso she wasshe was your girlfriend?

 Patrick [looks away] Yes.  Yes she was.  But its over now.

 Holly ImIm so sorry.

 Patrick Theres nothing to be sorry for.  When you left, ILara came along, and I guess she was just your replacement in more ways than one.

 Holly Im sorry, I really am.  [Pause]  Patrickwhen Tom kidnapped me, he said some things

 Patrick Oh God, that moron

 Holly No, no.  He just saidhehe said You had to go and wreck it all.  Cos thats what you do Holly.  I would have given you anything, and you just threw it all back in my face.  Andand it stuck in my mind since thenbecausebecause thats what I did to you[becoming upset, looks away]

 Patrick [taking Hollys hand] Sshh, Holly, dont.  [Pause] II know Ive asked you this before, butdo you understand what Ive been, what I am, trying to say to you?  Because if you dont, I guess what Im trying to say is thatthat[surprised with himself] I love you.

 Holly [surprised, looking up] Patrick, I

 Patrick [embarrassed, looks away] Sorry.  That was a stupid thing to say.

 Holly [smiling] No.  No - it wasnt.  ItsIIve missed you so much.

 Patrick You missed me?  You missed me?  Wonders never cease.  [Smiles]  So where are you working in Germany?

 Holly Oh, the Berndorf Krankenhaus.

 Patrick Never heard of it.  Probably some bog-standard, old

 Holly [interrupts] Yeah, thanks Patrick.  [Sarcastically] I thought youd never guess that I live a low-grade life

 Patrick Sono chance of you coming back here then?

 Holly II dont think so.  Ive moved on.

 Patrick Oh.  Still an SHO?

 Holly Yep.

 Patrick [sniffs proudly] Yeah, youve got a while to go before you could become a Registrar

 Holly Yes, in your opinion Patrick.  Remember that time when you got a haemotoma on your thumb when you caught it in the boot of your car and I had to sort it out?  Bet you couldnt have done that

 Patrick Yeah I could and for one thing, I wouldnt use a paperclip.

 Holly Well it was improvisation, we didnt have anything else.  [Pause, then grins]  You were scared.

 Patrick [defensive] I was not!

 Holly [grinning] Yes you were!  You wouldnt let me go near it!

 Patrick I was just weary of yourtechnique.

 Holly [grins, whispers] Big baby!

 Patrick Say that one more time and Ill

 Holly [interrupts, smiling] I love you.

 Patrick You what?!

 Holly I love you.

 Patrick [surprised] Wellyouve no idea how glad I am to hear that.

 Holly [smiles] Youve no idea how glad I am to say it.

 Scene Twenty-Seven

*Lara is outside Holby A&E, sitting on a bench near the carpark and having a smoke.  She wipes her eyes then takes another puff.  Dillon approaches. *

 Dillon Well thats my shift under wraps.  [Grins]  Hey, a guy came in this morning who almost got his finger bitten off by his pet tortoise that was interesting

 * Dillon waits for a response.  But Lara keeps staring into space, not paying attention.*

 Dillon - and Im about to take part in a sponsored spaghetti-eating contest

 Lara [snaps out of daze, looks up at Dillon] Huh?  [Looks away] Oh, sorry.

 Dillon Nah, its OK.  Mind if I join you?

 Lara [not bothered] Yeah, sure.  [Takes a puff on cigarette]  After all, Im on my own now.

 Dillon [sitting down, confused] Sorry?

 Lara Doesnt matter.

 Dillon Hang on, shouldnt you be with Patrick?

 Lara [mock laugh] Ha, yeah, sure.

 Dillon [realising there is a problem] Ahdo you wanna talk about it?

 Lara [immediately, sternly] No!

 Dillon [warily] OK

 [Pause]

 Lara [suddenly] I cant believe hes done this to me.

 Dillon Um, sorry for being so blunt, but whats happened?

 Lara Heshes gone and dumped me for someone else.

 Dillon [shocked] He what?!  [Checks himself]  I meanIm sorry.

 Lara- Yeah.  Someone called Holly Miles.  She was the SHO before I came or something.  [Looks ups]  Do you know her?

 Dillon No, I dont think so.

 Lara [looks away, takes another puff] She went to Germany or something, now she just comes back and claims him like he was hers all along.  I mean, who does she think she is?

 Dillon WellPatrick must care about her a lot to have taken her.

 Lara [looks at Dillon] Is this supposed to make me feel better?

 Dillon - Noits just supposed to get things into perspective.

 Lara [dimissive] Well the only thing I can see from my perspective is that Patrick loves her, and not me.

 Dillon Come on Lara, dont talk like that.

 Lara [getting upset/angry] Well how am I supposed to talk Dillon?  Am I supposed to carry on just like before, like nothing has happened?  [Becoming tearful]  The guy I love has just gone and chosen someone else over meand it hurts.

 Dillon [sympathetic, puts his arm around Lara] I know.  But, if Patrick loves Holly, then its just the way its going to have to be.

* Patrick is lying in his bed asleep in his sideward.  Holly enters, and closes the door quietly.  She is holding a bottle of water.  Patrick stirs. *

 Patrick [grumbles] Thanks for waking me up.

 Holly Oh, sorry.  I had to get this Im parched.

 *Holly fumbles with the screw cap of the bottle and tries to open it, but to no avail.  Patrick watches her. *

 Patrick Oh, give me that.

 * Holly, defeated by the cap, passes the bottle reluctantly to Patrick, who opens it swiftly.  He passes it back to Holly. *

 Holly What would I do without you?

 Patrick Ohh, I dont know.

 *Holly smiles, then takes a sip of water. *

 Patrick Holly, what are we going to do?

 Holly About what?

 Patrick About us.  Youreyoure not going back to Germany, are you?

 Holly Yes, yes I am.  I cant come back here, I havent got a job, a housemy life is over there now.

 Patrick But

 Holly Come with me.

 Patrick [stunned] What?

 Holly Come with me.

 Patrick [disbelieving] You are joking

 Holly Do I look like Im joking?

 Patrick Yes!

 *Holly gives Patrick a patronising look. *

 Patrick [defeated] No.

 Holly Well, think about it.  It would be a fresh start for both of us.  New places, new faces.  You may even get a consultants post.  Patrick, what is there left in Holby for you?

 Patrick Well, lots actually!

 Holly Patrick, youve got to understand - I cant come back here.  Theres too many bad memories.  At least say youll think about it?

 Patrick [after a thoughtful pause] OK.  But Ive thought about it.  [Takes a deep breath] Im coming with you.

 Holly [surprised] Are you sure?  I mean, are you serious?

 Patrick Youd better accept my answer before I take it back again!

 * Holly smiles.  There is a knock at the door and a nurse enters.  Holly and Patrick turn t look at her. * 

Nurse Sorry to interrupt, but I think Dr. Spiller needs to get some rest now.  Im going to come and give him his medication in a minute.

 Holly [looks at her watch] Oh, sorry.  Sure.

 *The nurse smiles, then leaves the room. *

 Holly Doesnt time fly?

 Patrick [smiles] It does when youre enjoying yourself.

 Holly Ill come and see you tomorrow, OK?

 Patrick [smiles] Youd better.

 * Holly smiles, then leans over and kisses Patrick on the forehead.  After a slight hesitation on both sides, Patrick takes Hollys hand and pulls her closer.  They kiss on the lips (not a full-on snog mind!!  That would ruin it!!) *

 Holly [smiling] Good night Dr. Spiller.

 Patrick [smiling] Good night Dr. Miles.

 * Holly walks towards the door, turns around and smiles at Patrick once again, and leaves the room, quitely closing the door behind her.  Patrick, clearly happy, grins to himself. *

 Scene Twenty-Nine

* Lara and Dillon are sitting outside still on the bench, in the dark. *

 Lara You dont have to stay, you can go if you want.  Im not really good company at the moment.

 Dillon No, its OK.  I want to make sure youre going to be alright.

 Lara [dismissive, trying to be strong] Oh, dont worry Ill be fine.

 Dillon [after a hesitation] Larawhat are you going to do now?

 Lara [sighs] II dont know.  Leave, I guess.

 Dillon [shocked] What?!  You cant just pack up and leave, thats

 Lara [upset, looks at Dillon] Why not?  If I stay here around[looks away]around him Ill go mad.  I cant face it, not now.

 Dillon Butthats not a reason for packing it in, for giving up your job, your life

 Lara Ill just go back to Australia, maybe Ill find some work there, or

 Dillon [suddenly taking hold of Lara by the shoulders, angrily] Lara, listen to me!  Listen to me!  You are NOT quitting this job over some man, OK?  I will not let you.

 Lara [desperate] But I cant change his mind, he doesnt want me

 Dillon No, perhaps not.  But someone else will Lara, someone else will.  Just you believe me.

 *Lara looks away, extremely upset. *

 Dillon [releasing his grip, softening] Lara, it didnt work out this time, perhaps you and Patrick werent right for each other.  There was obviously someone who wasnt quite out of Patricks life.  But therell be others.

 * The Casualty theme-tune begins (like it did in Past, Present, Future when Lara was alone in the hospital holding the ring, just before the actual tune starts if that makes sense!) *

 Lara [dejected, weak smile] I guess its true when they say Finders keepers, losers weepers.

 Dillon [sympathetic] Oh, come here.

 * Dillon puts his arms around Lara, and Lara starts sobbing quietly into his jacket.  The camera moves off them and moves up to focus on a star in the glittering night sky.  One bright star for two hearts and one mind.  A star for true love a star for Holly and Patrick.*

 [Cue Casualty theme-tune]
