Series TEN: Autumn 1995 - Spring 1996
EPISODE 1 Family Values Consultant Mike Barratt and nurse Rachel Longworth are called out to an accident when an athletics grandstand collapses. Among the injured are Jake (the son of the man who built the stand), Duncan (an insecure, overweight boy, who Jake has been encouraging to try getting into athletics) and a young girl with foster parents called Kelly. Duncan later dies, and Jack has an injured leg he might never run again, but he tells his father that he will never join the family business. Doctor Baz Hayes discovers that Kelly has severe spinal injuries. Kelly's natural mother arrives at A&E, but Kelly wants to stay with her foster parents. Baz is offered a promotion to Senior Registrar, but is indecisive about taking the job. Meanwhile, Charlie is frustrated with their affair. Mike tells Rachel that he is taking a permanent post at Holby, but she isn't interested. Amongst all this, the new SHO, doctor Daniel Perryman joins the team.

EPISODE 2 Money for Nothing A local farm inspector, Pat Brown, gets trapped in a barn. He is later saved, but not until one of the brothers who run the farm sets fire to the barn in question, and is caught in the madness. An injured surveyor tells paramedic Josh Griffiths that he has AIDS. The team become involved in his big problem should he cash his life insurance now, to support him and his wife through his illness, or wait for it to be used by his wife after he dies? Daniel is accused of the theft of a diamond rings, but it turns out that the woman who lost it (played by Sara Stockbridge) faked the loss to claim the insurance money. Meanwhile, Baz keeps Charlie on tenterhooks over her decision about the promotion.

EPISODE 3 Sacrifice A boy who has been illegally adopted, is kidnapped by a Romanian woman who claims to be his natural mother. When he is involved in an accident, he arrives in A&E, where the truth emerges. Staff Nurse Kate Wilson's son is caught up in a fire at an arcade. He has been avoiding his father, Trevor, who doesn't want to retire early. Paramedic Liz Harker is held at knifepoint by a depressed man, Billy. Josh doesn't call the police, instead trying to talk it through with the man; when Billy tries to molest Liz, she feels betrayed by Josh. Charlie must make major cuts in the department's budget. Also, he meets Peter, Baz's husband. Peter makes an attempt to be friendly, even though he knows the two had an affair nine years earlier.

EPISODE 4 Outside Bulawayo Animal-rights campaigners plant a car bomb under a professor's car, but his young daughter gets into it. While trying to save her, one of the activists is hurt, and brought into A&E. Even though he knows he will die, he refuses to accept treatment derived from animal experiments. An ex-pat, just back from Zimbabwe, is thought to have malaria. It is later discovered that he has Well's disease, having caught it from contaminated canal water on a fishing trip. He soon dies. Kate removes a wig, glued by a man to his bald head. New PR Officer Laura Milburn shadows the shift. On an adrenaline high, she asks nurse Martin 'Ash' Ashford out for a drink after the shift, which ends up back at her place.

EPISODE 5 Halfway House There is a gas explosion at a halfway house for the mentally ill; one of the residents dies at Holby. Accidentally, Daniel brings together the mother of the victim, and the resident who caused the blast. After a small fight, the guilty resident runs away and throws himself in front of a train. He later dies in A&E. Daniel is mortified. Kate takes a fishbone out of a man's throat. Daniel discharges the man, still hoarse. Mike tells Daniel to get the man straight back for a referral to ENT (the Ear, Nose and Throat Department). Charlie and Baz agree to meet after the shift, but both forget it is Baz's anniversary! Peter turns up and invites Charlie to join them over a drink. Charlie goes to meet them, but leaves, seeing the two together.

EPISODE 6 Compensation A child suffering from cerebral palsy is brought to A&E by his father. At the same time, his mother is at a hearing she is suing the hospital where he was born for negligence. The case falls through, and she rushes to Holby. The two parents are counselled on the best way to care for their son. Meanwhile, the mother's barrister is tense; she is pregnant, and gets annoyed when her boyfriend asks her to work less. She drives off, and runs over a woman on a pedestrian crossing. At A&E, she and her boyfriend sort out their priorities. Rachel has an argument with Mike for all to see. Later, Charlie talks to her about his own confusion regarding his feelings for Baz. Even Ash and Laura seem a bit distant.

EPISODE 7 Turning Point A police detective, about to retire, at last admits that his partner has been breaking the law, and caused an accident as a result. The detective was badly injured and other lives were at great risk. A suicidal woman whose baby died before being christened, steals a sick baby from Holby; she takes the child to try and christen it, while Josh and Liz search, frantic, for the woman and the baby. Finally, they rescue the infant from a cold church. Nurse Jude Kocarnik is nominated to become union shop steward; Ash supports this. Charlie wants to end his affair with Baz, and he tells her. For the duration of the shift they avoid each other, but Baz turns up next morning on Charlie's doorstep, begging him to reconsider. She is last seen leading him into his bedroom...

EPISODE 8 Battling On A mother with two children is heavily in debt. One of her sons gets attacked, and she assumes it is the eldest, a boy who tends to be a 'bad lot'. Actually, it is the younger, well-behaved son in A&E; he has been beaten up by his mum's creditors as a warning to her. An officer with the Salvation Army falls in love (again) with a girl he loved as a child. She is now married, and no longer in the SA. Upset, he drives off and crashes. In Casualty, he tells her he will leave the Salvation Army. She, however, refuses she doesn't want to be the reason for him losing his faith. A middle-aged man, who cross-dresses in secret, falls down some stairs. He arrives at A&E in women's clothes. The team are very tactful; however, his wife sees his high heels. Horrified, she blames herself.

If You go down to the Wards today
Casualty prepares for an invasion this week as Holly arranges for local kids to visit the department. Dr Spiller is decidedly supportive once hes seen the attractive teacher in charge of the children, but he has a rival in Max. Chloe and Barney are rivals too for promotion. Charlie is arranging to take Louis to Toronto to hand him over to Baz. And Duffy just cant understand why shes so tired. Call yourself a nurse, woman?
Merry Xmas Dr Spiller
Its all hands on deck in this Christmas episode, as snow and severe weather cause more than thei fair share of problems for the staff at Holby A&E. On the way to their shifts from a Christmas lunch, doctors Patrick Spiller and Holly Miles are stranded when Patricks car breaks down in the country. Forced to take shelter from the icy conditions in a nearby barn, the pair confess a few home truths. Back at the ward, a harassed Charlie is trying to cope with a skeleton staff and worsening weather. On a lighter note, Chloe Hill seems to have confused Christmas with the loaves and fishes parable, inviting everyone to spend Christmas at Amys.
Playing With Fire
Lara finally discovers Patrick but is she in time to save him? Yes she is as she starts to help him recover the ambulance arrive and take him to hospital where he later recovers. Later Phillipa ropes Lara into assisting with a patient suffering from a snake bite after she offends her by saying that because she is from Australia she should know how to deal with snake bites.
Blowing the Whistle
Patrick returns to work very bruised by his experience and reminded oif his past. Anna is still being bullied by Phillipa and Chloe is quizzed by the police.
Crash Course
Nikki wonders whether she is up to the job when she and Comfort are faced with a schizophrenic who had hacked his ear off, and an accident on a building site. Meanwhile a confession from an unexpected source leaves Comfort questioning her own beliefs.
Life and Soul
The commitment phobic Dr Spiller faces Christmas alone when he fails to match the enthusiasm of the married lover SGT Rachel for making a new life together. But breaking up is just the beguinning of his problems.
Holding the Baby
Patrick announces that he has passed his exam to qualify as a consultant so he will be leaving as soon as a post becomes available. Anna has a word with Chloe about her rent, as Chloe hasnt been paying her way since she sold her houseboat and still owes seven thousand pounds. Charlie goes and visits Duffy who is heavily pregnant with her third baby by her late husband Andrew. She explains to Charlie that she doesnt want to return to work at Holby because that was where her husband died, Charlie tries to convince her out of that decision. Duffys baby decides to arrive that night and Duffy insists that she doesnt want to go to Holby hospital so Charlie has to deliver the baby himself, until complications start to happen! Once the babys head is out Charlie realises there is a problem, the umbilical cord was wrapped around the babys head. He sorts the problem out only to find that once it was delivered the baby, now known to be a boy, wasnt breathing so Charlie had to do mouth-to-mouth till the baby started breathing on his own. Charlie then insists on calling an ambulance, as he knows that Duffy couldnt cope.
Also in this episode its the new paramedic Nikki Marshalls first day as a technician. She is working along side Fin and Josh when they get a call to the Green Man pub, as they are making their way there Josh drives through a red light and they crash! The ambulance goes across the road and smashes into a bridge that collapses and they are left hanging over a train track. After a few seconds Nikki who is uninjured makes her way out the back of the vehicle to check that Fin and Josh are ok, fortunately they were. She then goes to help the other victims of the crash, a car full of teenage boys. One of the boys was thrown clear of the vehicle and had blood blocking his airway so Nikki had to clear that to try and save his life. Another Boy, Danny, sees Nikki and runs off to hide. Later when the emergency services arrive they secure the ambulance from falling with a rope while they go and help the other Casualties. Once they had saved the others they came back and helped get out Fin and Josh. Josh was trapped behind the steering wheel so that was cut away although he was still trapped by his shoes. By this time the ambulance was swaying and very unstable so the fir brigade officer came over and grabbed Joshs hand to save him before the ambulance fell off the top of the bridge and landed in the railway line below, then it caught fire. Josh was left hanging onto the arm of the officer until he was pulled to safety. Luckily unhurt. Meanwhile Danny was hiding in the bushes by the ambulance until Dillon Cahill spotted him and went over to rescue him, but then when he gets there he finds Danny collapsed.
The motorcyclist Paramedic Comfort Jones is called to the Green Man pub to cover for Josh and Fin but when she gets there she finds out that there has been a pub fight due to the best man ordering a transsexual as a stripper for the stag night. They are all taken to Holby and Comfort sees Jake the receptionist eyeing up the stripper called Delight so comfort tells him that Delight was a free and single WOMAN. So Jake gives Delight his phone number and asks him/her out for a date.
Consultant Max Gallagher phones up his girlfriend Amanda to tell her that unfortunately he cannot make it home before 9:30 for a meal, so Amanda comes over to Holby with the meal and surprises Max. Meanwhile the police arrive at the hospital to talk to the people involved in the crash earlier, along with the police is sergeant Rachel James, she and Patrick were seeing each other even though Rachel is married. Patrick goes into the interview room and he and Rachel share a kiss. When Patrick returns to resusc, Max spots the lipstick that is on Patricks lips and has a go at him for playing around when he should be working, even though before Max was spending time with Amanda in his office.
Nikki tells the manager of paramedics in confidence about Joshs driving because she thought he might have been going too fast. Jeff then goes and tells the police about it, they then go and question everyone involved. Josh finds out that Danny was a known joy rider so he storms into resusc and asks Danny if it was worth it stealing the car, although he tells Josh that it was a new present as he had just signed for Holby FC. Josh feels terrible as just after Danny goes off the team do everything they can do but he dies.
